This is perhaps one of the most-recognized hazards for dogs that we humans can eat with regularity and suffer no ill effects, with the exception of a bit of weight gain, and all the problems that go with that. Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine that is toxic to dogs. Most dogs will get away with snatching a candy bar off a table here and there, but it should be noted that the most dangerous types of chocolate for dogs is dark chocolate, and unsweetened baking chocolate. Even though most dogs can get away with eating a little chocolate once in a while, the better course of action is to avoid giving to them at all, and always call your veterinarian even if your dog manages to ingest even a small amount of chocolate.
