#7 Check Scam

One scam that has gained a lot of traction in recent years is the fake check scam. There are a number of variations on this scam, but in essence, the criminal sends you a fake check and asks you to deposit it in your bank account. After you deposit the check, they instruct victims to wire a portion of the amount of the check back to them. The victim may think they are coming out ahead, since they get to keep the majority of the money, but the check is soon discovered to be a fake, and the bank reverses the payment they made on the check, leaving the victim holding the bag.
