A family of drugs known as corticosteroids is sometimes used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, which can seriously degrade the body’s ability to absorb calcium, leading to weakening of the bones and conditions such as osteoporosis. Rheumatoid arthritis patients are often advised to make sure they are getting extra calcium to help overcome the deficiency that medications may cause.
