Take a small light, like a compact flashlight, and shine it through the stone so you can observe the shadow. A real diamond will most likely cast a shadow that is simply gray, and will not be rainbow-colored. Also observe the halo that shows up around the the rim of the stone, since a real diamond should only show a bright halo.
