Depending on what it is you happen to be shopping for, you may be at risk of purchasing a counterfeit product. There’s a nearly endless supply of counterfeit products that are shipped all over the world with the intent of cheating consumers out of their hard-earned money. This is true for diamonds, and is probably an extremely lucrative enterprise for unscrupulous sellers due to the high cost of diamonds. Diamonds are the hardest naturally-occurring substance known to man, and in addition to their use in various types of jewelry, they have numerous industrial uses as well. It is most likely the average consumer shopping for jewelry who should be the most wary about counterfeits. Here are 6 ways to help determine if the diamond you are thinking of purchasing is the real thing.
#1 Breath test
This one is very easy and straightforward. Simply hold the diamond up to your mouth and exhale on it like you would if you were attempting to clean your eyeglasses or fog up a window. If the surface of the stone remains fogged up for a several seconds, it is probably a fake. A genuine diamond will dissipate the heat from your breath rapidly, and will only stay fogged for a second or two. It’s best to also have access to a diamond you know is genuine so you can compare how long they remain fogged up.
