Since women are about five times as likely as men to develop bone diseases such as osteoporosis, calcium is a vital mineral that no woman should ignore. Doctors often recommend a calcium supplement for women as a matter of routine, since even a healthy, balanced diet does not always prove sufficient quantities of this important mineral. A post-menopausal woman is often advised to take 1,200 milligrams of calcium per day while pre-menopausal women are usually encouraged to take about 1,000 milligrams per day.
