While this word may invoke images of bizarre or “crazy” behavior for some people, in this context, it is used to refer to the extreme “highs” that are experienced by those with bipolar disorder. Outwardly, mania may cause a person to feel euphoric and extremely happy, and may also cause them to become irritable, angry, impulsive and aggressive. Trouble sleeping may also be a problem due to high energy levels. Symptoms that appear to be related to ADD or ADHD may also be present, as there is often difficulty concentrating during these episodes. In severe cases, delusions and even hallucinations may come into play.
