There at least five variations of bipolar disorder which are characterized this way: Type 1, which might be described as “classic” bipolar disorder, where an individual experiences moods that cycle between “manic” and “depressive,” periods that can very in length. Type 2 is characterized by manic episodes which are less severe and episodes of depression which are essentially the same as in Type 1 patients. Cyclothymia is a lesser form of bipolar disorder where the symptoms are not as severe, and can last for up to two years. Mixed episodes involve the feelings of extreme lows which are accompanied by feelings of being energetic and motivated which can lead to an increased willingness to engage in risky or dangerous behaviors. Rapid-cycling is when a bipolar sufferer experiences four or more episodes of depression, mania or both within a single year.
